  • Holiday Season Means Free Tech Support for The Relatives

Holiday time usually means a great deal of Tech Support for family and friends as well as colleagues at work.  So for my favorite work Tech Support person and in order to keep it straight myself, I have some ideas organized from my background as well as others around the internet.

    Malwarebytes (MBAM)

One author’s favorite malware removal tool gets the first spot on the list because, well, it’s the first app they turn to when cleaning up troublesome computers. The free version of MBAM appears to work miracles.

    PCDecrapifier

ON new machines, with all the useless preinstalled programs, run PCDecrapifier

    CCleaner

CCleaner is up to version 3.0 and a great way to clean up old and unneeded files, including Web browsers.

    Join.me

Join.me is a great way, and brand new, to help users from remote when you aren’t there.  From LogMeInPC this is the easiest and fastest to use and I cured a family problem just this weekend with it.

    Microsoft Security Essentials

Never walk away from a freshly-cleaned system without making sure it’s got a good, up-to-date antivirus / anti-malware application installed. MSE is my current favorite and works especially well on Windows 7 installations.

I recently begain using inSSIDer 2 to troubleshoot WLAN networks, primarily because I am running Windows 7 on 64-bit machines and this one works very well with that.  MetaGeek has done a nice job and I suppose it was time I upgraded from NetStumbler.

  • Chrome Extension: Highlight to Search

Everyone has a list and a love of AddOns and Extensions for Firefox and Google.  I am no different.  And I have gone through the period of time when I have a lot of them, and when I have less of them.  What made the largest difference in my use was when Google made it so Chrome syncs, which ends up auto-installing in new Chrome installations easily, although not the settings inside each extension.  And with Firefox I mastered FEBE with Box.Net to install profiles on new installations of Firefox.

Some extensions/addons are complete tools in themselves and some simply provide something that was missing and augments the actual browsing experience.  Highlight to Search which allows you to search keywords by highlighting instead of typing them into a search box is one of the latter.

I am enjoying this extension and it is setup in all my browers as they sync.  I am having minor issues getting i to work for https pages, despite setting the options for this function.  But it is so nice, try it out.

This summer I haven’t posted as I was out riding across the TransAmerica, TransAm, #acatransam! The trail took me from Yorktown, VA to Portland, OR. See the trip, with notes and pix on Google Maps or TrackMyTour.

I am decompressing at present and haven’t even cleaned or performed maintenance on my Rivendell Atlantis: Home 4,143 miles, 0 flats, original tires! It was a sweet bike to take on the road and saved me!

  • Your Own Personal QR Code

This is mostly just information from the wonderful Gina Trapani and her article on How to Make Your Personal QR Code read it for a more thorough take on the entire subject and great comments.  I am mostly just saving the links to the generators so I can find them in a hurry.

I see QR codes everywhere and I wanted one of my own.

A QR (“quick response”) code is a square barcode that makes getting URLs, location coordinates, any text or contact information onto a phone quickly. With a barcode scanner app installed, you just point your phone’s camera at the code to read its contents.

To find a scanner application, Google “QR Reader” and the model of your phone.  There is a short review of them for an iPhone, the model I own, here at splitbrain.

This QR code generator can embed a URL, text, a phone number, or an addressed and ready-to-send SMS message into a QR code.

If you Google “QR code generator” you’ll find others, but beware of generators that force a redirect through their site when someone scans the resulting code and gets a URL.

  • In The Shop: Miro 3.0 and the New Miro Video Converter

Drop on over to GetMiro.com and download the new Miro 3.0 which is billed as “Faster, louder, smoother, subtitles!” and upgrade.  For those who don’t use Miro to organize and play all your video files as well as subscribe to Hulu, TED and an amazing amount of other feeds, well, why not?

What I am playing with in the shop right now is the new MiroVideoConverter which not only promises to be the easiest way to convert almost anything to an MP4, but also one of the few desktop applications to encode Ogg Theora videos.
